What a packed programme we had for our penultimate meeting of the Toastmaster year, with five prepared speeches and table topics.
Our first speaker was Alan who gave a humorous and emotional speech on having to re-take his driving test. With a speech title "Driving me mad" he told us about his experience and what it meant to him to be back on the road.
Stephen gave his second speech to the club about his plans to stand at the next council elections, he had the courage to invite questions from the floor which was a break from how speeches are generally delivered however it worked.
Therese's storytelling speech had the objectives of bringing history to life. She told us about a recent holiday to Cyprus and delved into the history of the town of Famagusta, showing pictures from 1974 and the present day.
Our fourth speaker was our VP of Education, John who gave a technical presentation on bitcoin. With a speech title "Pound by pound, bit by bit", John enlightened the audience with the history of bitcoin, how it works and encouraged us to consider the use of bitcoin in the future.
Lastly, our President, Mell gave a speech from the interpretive speaking manual. Bringing someone else's speech to life can be a tricky thing to do, however Mell packed the speech with vocal variety, emotion and poise to win her the best speaker award.
Table topics master was Brian who conjured up a different format for the impromptu speaking which comprised of giving the skeleton of a joke and asking the speaker to use their own imagination to fill it out and deliver it. Brian invited Amanda, Jo and John to come on stage to tell the jokes of which Jo won best table topic speaker.
There was a flurry of evaluations from Adarsh, Graeme, Amanda, Jo and Asha all of whom gave precise feedback on commendations and recommendations. Best evaluator was given to Graeme.
The evening was rounded off with a "cri de coeur" from Brian that Wokingham Speakers are holding their annual summer party on Friday 1st July at Bearwood Golf Club, an evening not to be missed!!
